In a groundbreaking announcement during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared the signing of a historic agreement between Italy, Albania, and the United Arab Emirates. The partnership, focused on renewable energy, underscores a shared commitment to sustainable energy solutions and international cooperation.
“This is an agreement I am personally very proud of,” said Prime Minister Meloni, referring to the interconnection that will transport renewable energy produced in Albania to Italy. The agreement was signed alongside Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
Strengthening Historic Ties
Meloni highlighted the longstanding connections between Italy and the Western Balkans, emphasizing her close friendship with Prime Minister Rama. “Italy has traditionally maintained strong ties with the countries of the Western Balkans, as my friendship with Edi Rama demonstrates. Over time, these connections have led to significant energy infrastructure projects,” she noted.
Citing the example of the 420-kilometer electrical interconnection linking Italy and Montenegro via the Adriatic seabed, Meloni described it as a strategic asset that strengthens regional energy collaboration. “We aim to build on this foundation with an equally ambitious project spanning the Adriatic,” she announced.
A Strategic Partnership for Renewable Energy
The new agreement represents a strategic partnership to develop and export renewable energy. Under the framework, a submarine power cable will connect Albania and Italy, enabling the transfer of renewable energy generated in Albania to Italy.
“This project is a testament to the strong relationships between our three governments, as well as our private sectors and energy network operators,” Meloni explained. She praised the initiative as a tangible example of how global partners can cooperate effectively, despite geographical distances, to address shared challenges.
Global Cooperation for a Sustainable Future
Meloni expressed confidence in the project, emphasizing its broader implications for international energy cooperation. “This agreement reflects how new forms of partnership can be created by those who are willing to look at the bigger picture. It’s not just about local benefits but about reimagining the global energy landscape,” she stated.
The collaboration marks a pivotal step in leveraging Albania’s renewable energy potential to support Italy’s energy transition goals. It also highlights the UAE’s role as a key facilitator in fostering international partnerships for sustainability.
The signing of this agreement reinforces Italy’s leadership in renewable energy initiatives and underscores its commitment to advancing green energy solutions on a global scale.
